Breakdown of diplomacy further complicates Iran nuclear issue, Pakistan warns Global protection body
Pakistan informed the UN Global protection body on Thursday that the breakdown of diplomacy in the Middle East has further complicated the Iranian nuclear issue, as Secretary-Senior commander António Guterres cautioned that the escalating crisis poses a “grave security concern to global calm and protection.”
Speaking at a Council short report on the 1737 Panel, which monitors UN economic penalties related to Iran’s nuclear programme, Pakistan’s Permanent Representative, Asim Iftikhar Ahmad, underscored deep divisions within the Council over nuclear-related economic penalties on Iran.
“The Council remains divided on the 1737 Panel issue,” Diplomatic representative Ahmad stated. “Unfortunately, this split is delaying the appointment of Chairs of the Subsidiary Bodies, significantly hindering their work.“
He emphasized that disagreements over the panel “must not be allowed to obstruct the routine functioning of the Council and its Subsidiary Bodies,” noting that the lack of accord on a short report “should have formed the basis of today’s session.”
The 1737 Panel, established under UN Global protection body Formal declaration 1737 in 2006, is responsible for overseeing economic penalties on Iran, reviewing reports from the Global Atomic Energy Bureau (IAEA).
The panel’s work includes reviewing adherence with the authority, considering requests for exemptions, designating individuals and entities subject to economic penalties, and reporting regularly to the Global protection body. Disputes over its functioning, including procedural issues and appointments delays progress.
