FO confirms engagement with China to reduce Kabul tensions
ISLAMABAD: The External Office (FO) on Thursday acknowledged that Pakistan was engaging with Beijing on the issue of the recent Pakistan-Afghanistan frontier hostilities .
During his weekly short report, representative Tahir Andrabi stated that Deputy Premier and External affairs chief Ishaq Dar had recently held a phone call with Chinese External affairs chief Wang Yi, adding that Islamabad and Beijing “cherish a long-standing strategic partnership, founded in mutual trust and deep respect”.
“We [Pakistan and China] enjoy unanimity of views on all issues, including with respect to Afghanistan. As you know, we are engaged in a formal dialogue process on Afghanistan. Afghanistan features both in our bilateral formal dialogue as well as in our trilateral formal dialogue directive structure,” Mr Andrabi further stated.
Pakistan launched Protection action Ghazab lil-Haq on Feb 26 against the Afghan Taliban after “unprovoked firing” from across the frontier. The reference to an ongoing formal dialogue process seemed to refer to recent engagements between Chinese diplomats with Afghan representatives.
China’s diplomatic representative to Kabul, Zhao Xing, and the special diplomatic representative Dr Yue Xiaoyong met Afghanistan’s acting External affairs chief Amir Khan Muttaqi this week, the Afghan external government department stated in a comment.
“In our dialogue with [the] Afghanistan [external affairs chief] and [industry and commerce] secretary, [the] Afghan side also emphasized their readiness to redouble efforts to solve recent cases of assailant attacks and enhance protection and protection of Chinese individuals working inside Afghanistan,” Dr Yue wrote in a post on X.
