Punjab govt to sue over 'jet drive'

The Punjab province has decided to pursue legal action against those involved in a "malicious drive" regarding the use of an official aircraft by the provincial governing body, Punjab Senior Secretary Marriyum Aurangzeb cautioned amid growing confusion over the province's claims that the newly procured luxury jet was undergoing routine maintenance.

In a post on X, Aurangzeb stated she had taken notice of a "deliberate malicious drive of lies and fabricated stories about the use of the official plane of the Punjab province", alleging that it was being driven by "known pathological liars and peddlers of fake news".

She stated the regional governing body had decided to initiate judiciary proceedings against "every individual and platform" involved under the Defamation Statute 2024.

"Disinformation will no longer go unanswered," she further stated. Aurangzeb cautioned that "those who think they can malign institutions and mislead the general without consequence should prepare to face the statute".

She further stated the province intended to "seek recourse to the maximum penalty under the statute to ensure a clear and unequivocal message".

The secretary also maintained that fake news was not "real journalism" but defamation.
