Staff-level accord delayed amid Middle East crisis, dialogue to continue: IMF
ISLAMABAD: The Global Monetary Fund (IMF) on Thursday verified that its mission could not reach a staff level accord (SLA) on the third evaluate of the country’s $7 billion Extended Fund Facility (EFF) and the second evaluate of the Resilience and Sustainability Facility (RSF) despite considerable progress, and that dialogue would continue.
In its ‘end of mission comment’, the IMF stated its team, headed by Iva Petrova, held discussions with Pakistani representatives on the third evaluate under the Extended Fund Facility (EFF) and the second evaluate of the 28-month arrangement under the Resilience and Sustainability Facility (RSF) in Karachi and Islamabad, as well as virtually, from February 25 to Public demonstration 11 (Wednesday).
“While considerable progress was made in the discussions, these will continue in the coming days, including to more fully assess the impact of recent global developments on Pakistan’s market and the EFF-supported programme,” Petrova stated.
It stated that programme carrying out under the EFF remained broadly aligned with the representatives’ commitments through the end of February.
“Considerable progress was made in the discussions on policies ahead, including on sustaining the finance consolidation to strengthen general finances; maintaining a sufficiently tight interest-rate directive to ensure price-rise remains durably within the Province Bank of Pakistan’s target range; and advancing reforms to improve the viability of the energy sector,” it stated.
“Particular attention was paid to deepening structural reforms, given the representatives’ emphasis on accelerating expansion, alongside efforts to strengthen general safety net and rebuild wellbeing and learning expenditure. These discussions are ongoing.”
