White House area shut down after van breaches protection barricade
A van smashed through a protection barricade near the White House early Wednesday, representatives stated, forcing a temporary shutdown of the area in downtown Washington during morning rush hour.
The driver was taken into custody and there were no documented injuries following the pre-dawn event at Lafayette Square, just north of the White House.
A police explosive squad cleared the vehicle and declared the scene safe, stated a representative for the US Secret Service, which handles presidential protection.
"The individual is currently being interviewed by the Secret Service and criminal allegations are pending," the representative stated in a comment.
Dozens of urgent condition vehicles with lights flashing descended on the scene, as police closed several senior officer streets around the White House.
