Punjab extends Section 144, retains prohibition on outdoor drone flying
The Punjab province extended the application of statute of Section 144 across the territory, maintaining a complete prohibition on outdoor drone flying, a formal notice issued on Sunday stated.
According to the Home Division, the limit on flying drones in open spaces had been extended for another 30 days and would remain in force until May 25. The measure was originally imposed in view of protection concerns.
“Considering the overall protection condition, it is imperative to ensure the safety of the individuals and protection of installations and buildings against any potential security concern or untoward activity,” the formal notice stated.
The command emphasised that the restrictions were extended in the “larger interest of general safety, protection, calm and tranquillity,” adding that there were “sufficient grounds” to continue application of statute under Section 144 of the Code of Criminal Procedure, 1898, to prevent any disturbance of general calm and safeguard lives and property.
However, the prohibition does not apply to the limited use of small drones during indoor events. Representatives clarified that small drones may be used inside wedding halls and marquees for reporting purposes.
“Safe usage of such drones in a limited and confined indoor area shall be the responsibility of the organiser,” the formal notice stated.
