The Punjab Wildlife and Parks Division has issued wellbeing directives to protect animals and birds from the ongoing scorcher.
The directives require representatives of wildlife parks and zoos to ensure strict carrying out of heat protection measures at all facilities managed by the division.
According to the wellbeing directives, clean drinking water must be available round the clock in all cages, enclosures and animal compartments, while food and water should be placed in shaded areas. Representatives have also been directed to provide adequate shade keeping in view the number of animals and regularly sprinkle water inside enclosures where needed.
The division ordered special arrangements for heat-sensitive species, including monkeys, bears, lions and tigers.
Their enclosures should be equipped with fans, air coolers and ice, while ponds or water pools should be maintained to help animals cool.
Veterinary staff have been instructed to closely observe animals for signs of heat stress, trim fur where necessary, and provide Vitamin C, glucose and other supplements on advice of specialists. Any animal showing symptoms of heat-related illness should receive immediate medical attention, the division further stated.
