Israel grants US confiscated Palestinian land to build Jerusalem diplomatic mission complex for $1
Israel and the United States signed an accord on Wednesday under which Washington will receive a plot of land once owned by Palestinians in Jerusalem for $1 to build the permanent site of the US Diplomatic mission in the metro.
External affairs chief Gideon Saar and US Diplomatic representative to Israel Mike Huckabee signed the accord, in the presence of Jerusalem Chief Moshe Lion, to allocate the land for building the permanent US Diplomatic mission compound in Jerusalem, the Israeli External Government department stated in a comment.
"The lease accord for the land is for 99 years, and the United States will pay Israel the sum of $1," Huckabee stated.
During his first term in office in December 2017, US Head Donald Trump recognised Jerusalem as Israel’s capital and ordered the transfer of the US Diplomatic mission from Tel Aviv. The diplomatic mission’s temporary site opened in May 2018.
The ruling drew broad global disapproval at the time as a violation of the global consensus on Jerusalem’s status.
In 2022, Adalah, a freedoms group in Israel, stated the land allocated for the diplomatic mission compound had been confiscated from Palestinians under Israel’s 1950 Absentees’ Property Statute.
