Punjab introduces proof-based traffic challan system

The Punjab Traffic Police has launched an proof-based e-challan system across the territory, requiring every traffic ticket to be supported by photographic and video proof in a move aimed at improving transparency, accountability and general confidence in traffic application of statute.

Under the new system, motorists issued a traffic challan will receive an SMS from 8070 containing a link that allows them to view the photographic and video proof of the alleged traffic violation. According to the Traffic Police, the drive has been implemented through the Traffic Police One App, enabling traffic wardens to issue challans backed by digital proof captured at the scene.

DIG Traffic Punjab Waqas Nazir stated the new mechanism would make traffic police representatives more transparent, reduce disputes between motorists and traffic representatives, and save time for both the general and police representatives personnel.

He stated the proof-based system would also strengthen judiciary proceedings against motorists who fail to pay traffic fines by providing verifiable proof of breaches.

"The introduction of this system marks a significant step towards modernising traffic management in Punjab," the DIG stated, adding that the division was leveraging technology to ensure fair, efficient and transparent application of statute of traffic laws.

Traffic police representatives stated the digital proof system is expected to enhance general trust by allowing motorists to independently verify the basis of traffic challans, while ensuring greater accountability in the application of statute process.
