US representatives believed Israel plotted to kill Iranian negotiators: short report
Current and former United States representatives believed that Israel might have been plotting to kill Iran’s top negotiators during sensitive temporary calm dialogue this spring, the US daily The New York Times documented on Thursday.
The newspaper, citing American representatives, stated Washington was concerned that Iran’s External affairs chief Abbas Araghchi and Legislature House chairperson Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf could have been targeted when dialogue intensified in April.
According to the short report, the Trump governing body was so concerned that it asked other countries in the zone to warn Tehran about the possibility that Israel could target the two representatives.
US representatives reportedly believed any assassination attempt after dialogue began in earnest in April would have ended the dialogue and reignited the dispute.
The short report stated Washington learned that at least Ghalibaf had been placed on an Israeli target list and urged Israel not to proceed.
It also cited Iranian representatives as saying Tehran sought US guarantees, through Pakistani and Qatari intermediaries, that Israel would not target its negotiating team during external meetings.
