Pakistan at 78: Are We Truly Free?

78 years of Pakistan. The promise was an independent Islamic democracy. The reality? A cycle of military rule. Are we celebrating True freedom or an illusion?

A reflection on Pakistan's journey 78 years after independence, questioning the state of its foundational ideals of sovereignty and democracy in the face of historical challenges and contemporary issues

Pakistan is a country that came into existence as an independent country on the black map of this world 78 years ago! This country was the first country in the world that was built based on the word, and the foundation of this country was laid on a slogan: La ilaha illallah (There is no god but Allah). The slogan of this country's system was to establish a government according to an independent and Islamic religion in which everything was to be first of Allah's sovereignty and then of the government that was democratically elected by its people, which was also clear in the first constitution of Pakistan, which was founded by the Constituent Assembly of Pakistan. Then this flowing water has been going through the process of many filtrations and is going through the same process till today.

Pakistan became known in the world as an independent state, the foundation of which was laid by many people, but the most notable name was that of Quaid-e-Azam, who was later given the title of the Father of the Nation (The Founder of Pakistan). He sacrificed himself for this country. The person who sacrificed his life in the movement for this independent country was Dr. Allama Iqbal, who awakened the people through his poetry in his revolutionary philosophical style.

Dr. Allama Iqbal

He worked hard to bring this country into being, he emerged as a ray of hope in the shadow of despair, and you were later awarded titles such as Poet of the East and Poet of the Nation.

Pakistan was founded on the religion of Islam, in which an independent state was given to the people for their care!

You people are now independent! Quaid-e-Azam

Time passed, many laws were made, many courts and many constitutions were made. But the foundation of this country, an Islamic state, which was the first Islamic country in the world, which was based on the pen, was the first tremor when the first martial law was imposed in Pakistan. October 7, 1958 was the day, when the foundation of Pakistan in which the hard work and sacrifices of many people were laid, was laid by President Sikandar Mirza by making General Ayub Khan the Chief Martial Law Administrator.

Later on, the 1962 constitution was made, but it could not fill the gap that General Ayub Khan had laid down, and then came the time of 25 March 1969, when General Yahya Khan himself assumed the Ministry of Martial Law. Perhaps these martial laws were not so important in history! because they were perhaps a sign of improvement, or the government was not capable enough to handle someone whose history had become so popular that it was difficult to even listen to them, but two nails had already been driven into the foundation of Pakistan.

However, this process had exposed the entire system of Pakistan, and in such circumstances, something had to happen. And thus, on March 26, 1971, an independent and democratic state of Pakistan, East Pakistan, separated as a result of the Bangladesh Liberation War and became a separate country, which became today's Bangladesh. And thus, a country was broken!

Learning nothing from this situation, the country imposed its third martial law in history, and this time, General Zia-ul-Haq imposed martial law on July 5, 1977. This martial law was imposed when the situation in Pakistan was very bad, including Balochistan, and then in 1988, after General Zia died in a plane crash, civilian rule resumed.

But this game was not to end, and history repeated itself, and thus on October 12, 1999, Nawaz Sharif was removed by Pervez Musharraf under Pakistan's fourth martial law, which Pervez Musharraf called a 'declared emergency' and not martial law. But this emergency was not to last that long, so on November 3, 2007, martial law-like conditions were imposed. And thus, Pakistan's 1973 constitution was suspended, and the Chief Justices of the Supreme Court were dismissed.

On November 12, 2007, Musharraf issued some amendments to the Military Act, which gave some additional powers to the armed forces. This shook the foundation of Pakistan, which I talked about above.

Pakistan has now become a state in which the government is from Pakistan, but who is controlling it?!

In 2024, Pakistan's ranking on Transparency International's Corruption Perceptions Index (CPI) dropped to 135 out of 180, a score of 27 out of 100, which provides a backdrop to the fact that corruption rates in Pakistan are increasing.

Everything is now no longer democratic in Pakistan, since the coming into existence of Pakistan, no government has completed its full five years of rule. Some Prime Ministers have been removed or someone has been punished, and an interim government has been brought in to continue 5 years of remaining Government. Even today's media is openly saying that we know where decisions are being made! On national TV or today's social media?

And so Pakistan is celebrating its 78th Independence Day today! But the question is, are we truly free? Is Pakistan free?
