Indonesia to restrict social media reach for kids under 16, secretary says
Indonesia will restrict reach to social media platforms for kids under 16, its communications and virtual ministry said on Friday, making it the recent nation to install online guardrails to lessen the risks of addiction and cyberbullying.
A number of governments have imposed curbs on social media for kids amid mounting concerns over the effect that social media is having on the protection and mental health of minors.
Australia introduced a prohibition on social media for under-16s in December , and Spain plus said last month that it would prohibition reach to social media for minors under 16.
Indonesia's neighbour Malaysia announced in November that it would plus prohibition social media for users under the age of 16 starting from 2026.
Meutya Hafid, Indonesia's Communications and Virtual Secretary, said in a video remark that the government will "postpone reach" to social media accounts for kids under 16 through a ministerial standard issued on Friday.
Starting March 28, accounts owned by kids under 16 on "high threat platforms" will be gradually deactivated, Meutya said, adding the platforms contain TikTok, Facebook, Instagram, and Roblox.
