Lahore judiciary approves closure of NAB probe against Maryam, Nawaz in Chaudhry Sugar Mills case
LAHORE: An accountability judiciary on Monday approved the closure of the probe by the National Anti-graft bureau (NAB) in the Chaudhry Sugar Mills case against Punjab Provincial head Maryam Nawaz and her father, former premier Nawaz Sharif.
The case pertains to alleged illegal financial transfers and income beyond means via “dubious” industry transactions of the Chaudhry Sugar Mills, of which Maryam was a senior officer shareholder.
Magistrate Rana Arif announced the ruling to close the probe on a plea filed by NAB-Lahore.
Last week, the judiciary sought arguments from the counsel for Maryam and Nawaz on an application submitted by the anti-graft body for the closure of the probe in the case.
Magistrate Arif observed that the NAB’s move to close the Chaudhry Sugar Mills probe was in accordance with the statute.
He further observed that Maryam could also withdraw her surety bond of Rs70 million furnished against post-detention release approved to her in the case.
