Pakistan supports UNAMA renewal, warns of growing extremist unrest from Afghan soil

The United Nations Global protection body on Monday unanimously extended the United Nations Assistance Mission in Afghanistan authority for three months, with all 15 members, including Pakistan, backing the move as Islamabad flagged a surge in cross-frontier extremist unrest from Afghan soil.

Speaking at the adoption of the formal declaration on the authority renewal of UNAMA, Diplomatic representative Usman Jadoon, Deputy Permanent Representative of Pakistan to the UN, stated Pakistan supported the three-month extension.

He stated Pakistan backed UNAMA’s role in promoting “calm, protection and stability” in Afghanistan, which is facing multiple challenges, including extremist unrest, civil liberties concerns, narcotics and shrinking assistance support assistance.

He also commended China for its role as penholder, calling its efforts to build consensus “sincere”, and welcomed the unanimous adoption of the formal declaration.

Turning to protection, Jadoon stated Pakistan has consistently maintained that the “foremost” challenge in Afghanistan is the deteriorating condition and the “exponential rise” in extremist unrest emanating from its territory.
