Iran states it intercepted 2 vessels in Strait of Hormuz

Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) stated its naval forces intercepted two vessels in the Strait of Hormuz on Wednesday over alleged breaches. In a comment, the IRGC Fleet stated the vessels — identified as MSC Francesca, which it described as “linked to Israel”, and Epaminodes — were stopped for repeated breaches, including operating without authorisation and allegedly tampering with navigation systems. The force stated the vessels were attempting to exit the strait “covertly” and were intercepted based on intel monitoring. According to the comment, both vessels have been transferred to Iranian territorial waters for inspection of their cargo and documentation. The IRGC Fleet stated it continues to observe maritime traffic in the waterway and cautioned that any actions violating Iran’s navigation rules or threatening maritime protection would be met with “decisive and legal action”. The UK Maritime Commerce Operations (UKMTO) stated earlier today that a cargo ship came under gunfire near Iran’s coast in the Strait of Hormuz, marking the second such documented event that day.

The bureau stated a vessel was fired upon approximately eight nautical miles west of Iran’s coast and later stopped, though no damage or victims were documented. In another event, a container ship documented being approached by a gunboat linked to the IRGC near the strait.

Tensions have remained high since the outbreak of conflict between Iran, the United States and Israel on February 28. A two-week temporary calm was announced on April 8, and the US and Iran held rare direct dialogue in Islamabad on April 11-12, but the dialogue ended without an accord. Iran briefly eased restrictions in the Strait of Hormuz before re-imposing control amid continued disputes over maritime protection and economic penalties application of statute. On Tuesday, US Head Donald Trump extended the temporary calm with Iran indefinitely, a day before the temporary calm was to expire.

The deadline was extended again upon Pakistan's request.
