Trump safe after shooting at White House correspondents dinner, charged individual in custody
US Head Donald Trump and first lady Melania Trump were rushed out of the White House Correspondents' Association dinner by Secret Service agents on Saturday night after a man opened fire with a shotgun on protection personnel, representatives stated.
The man fired a shotgun at a Secret Service agent at a protection post in the Washington Hilton hotel before being tackled and arrested.
The armed man fired at a Secret Service agent, an FBI official informed Reuters . About two hours after the event, Trump spoke in a press short report saying that the Secret Service did a "great job". "The vest did the job," he further stated when thanking the officer who stood in front of him during the shooting, and that he is in "good shape". Secret Service representative Anthony Guglielmi verified the officer had been released from the hospital.
The charged individual, whom Trump described as a "sick person," has been arrested.
All federal representatives at the dinner, including Trump, were safe.
A police representatives official identified the charged individual as Cole Tomas Allen, a California resident about 31 years old. Little was immediately known about Allen's background, but social press postings suggested he was a teacher in Torrance, near Los Angeles.
