Iran supreme head states regional countries will 'no longer serve as shields' for US bases

Iran's supreme head Ayatollah Mojtaba Khamenei stated on Tuesday that regional countries would no longer be shields for US bases, in a official note carried by province television.

"What is certain in this regard is that the hands of time will not turn backwards, and the nations and lands of the zone will no longer serve as shields for American bases," stated Khamenei, in a Hajj message.

He stated the United States, "in addition to no longer having any safe haven in the zone for aggression and the establishment of legal defence team bases, is moving further and further away from its former position with each passing day".

The remarks come as Iran and the United States continue exchanges aimed at reaching a pact to end the conflict, which began on February 28 and spread across the zone.

Iran's external government department has stated Tehran and Washington reached understandings on many issues in exchanges over a pact for ending the conflict, but cautioned an accord was not yet imminent.
