Austria urges Europe to host Anthropic following US curbs on AI reach
Austria has proposed that the European Union should ponder hosting Anthropic within the bloc's borders in mandate to counter efforts by the United States to bar foreigners from using the AI firm's most advanced models.
In a letter to EU Tech Commissioner Henna Virkkunen released by the Austrian government, Austria's State Secretary for Digitalisation, Alexander Proell, wrote it was crucial that Europe was not reduce off from major innovations.
"Let us jointly probe the strategic establishment and participation of Anthropic within the European Union. With judicial assurance, arena reach, resources and a set of values that suit this firm," Proell said in the letter.
He did not say how the step could be taken and acknowledged there would be scepticism about whether it was possible.
"The real query is not whether it is easy," Proell wrote. "The query is whether we Europeans are prepared to be the architects of our technological upcoming, or whether we wish to stay mere administrators of decisions made elsewhere."
Anthropic did not immediately respond to a petition for remark on the Austrian proposal.
