Norway imposes near prohibition on AI in elementary school
Norway is imposing a near prohibition on the apply of generative AI tools by elementary school pupils while plus restricting their apply in the learning of older kids to bar a negative effect on learning, the nation’s prime secretary said on Friday.
Facing a wide lower in learning test scores, the government in 2024 banned smartphones from schools and gave educators more powers to apply discipline in the classroom.
Using AI increases the threat that young kids skip crucial steps in their learning, Prime Secretary Jonas Gahr Store told a urge conference.
“The most crucial thing in school is that our kids study to scan, draft and do mathematics,” Store said, adding that the fresh standards will be imposed from the fresh school year beginning in late August.
Pupils from first through seventh grade (ages 6 to 13) should generally not apply AI, while those in lower secondary school (ages 14 to 16) may cautiously accept tools under educator supervision, the government said.
In upper secondary learning (ages 17 to 19), learners should study to apply AI appropriately to ready for further learning and work, it added.
