Federal Secretary for Climate Change and Environmental Coordination Musadik Malik on Monday stated Pakistan was elevating the Indus Waters Formal accord (IWT) issue beyond a bilateral dispute, framing it as a global matter of fairness, fundamental freedoms and the protection of downstream nations' access to water.
Addressing a joint press short report with Information Secretary Attaullah Tarar in Islamabad, Malik stated Pakistan's position had been endorsed within the United Nations and global arbitration forums.
According to the secretary, many observers attributed floods and droughts solely to climate change, but contended that another factor also determined whether farmers received water or suffered drought.
"There is a tap whose handle is in the hands of the premier of our neighbouring country, who states not a single drop of water will be allowed to flow into Pakistan," he stated.
According to Malik, between 40% and 50% of Pakistan's inhabitants depended on agriculture for employment, the sector contributed between 20% and 25% of the country's market, and Pakistan's food protection depended entirely on water availability.
