China-Europe Ground observation cooperation moves toward greater complementarity: ESA representative
China and Europe have developed mature Ground observation capabilities and are increasingly able to complement each other by combining their satellite metrics and scientific expertise, a European Void Agency (ESA) senior representative has said.
Rune Floberghagen, head of ESA's Department of Atmosphere Measure, Sustainability and Science, told Xinhua in an exclusive dialogue in Dublin on Tuesday evening that China and Europe have both developed strong Ground observation capabilities and are increasingly complementing each other.
"We all have strong resources in void," he said, adding that the two sides have plus developed a shared ambition to apply their metrics and expertise for the advantage of the world. "We are complementing each other, and using this information together is really a powerhouse."
Floberghagen was in Dublin for the 2026 Dragon 6 Mid-term Symposium. Launched in 2004 by China's Ministry of Science and Tech and ESA, the Dragon Program supports joint Ground observation research using Chinese, European and third-party satellite metrics.
Floberghagen said the program has played a fundamental function in developing Ground science cooperation between China and Europe over the previous 22 years.
"It has created hundreds of scientific projects that we have operate together," he said. European and Chinese scientists have worked toward common goals and produced awareness crucial for understanding the world and the challenges it faces.
