PlayStation to finish physical game discs for fresh releases from 2028, Sony confirms
Sony has confirmed that it will halt producing physical discs for all fresh PlayStation game releases from January 2028, marking a major tilt towards virtual distribution for the portal.
In a remark published on the representative PlayStation Blog, the firm said all fresh games released from January 2028 onwards will be available exclusively in virtual formats through the PlayStation Store and participating retailers offering virtual game codes.
The tilt applies only to fresh releases. Sony confirmed that games launched before the January 2028 reduce-off will persist to be produced and sold on physical discs.
Explaining the judgment, the firm said it reflects changing customer habits and the wider entertainment division's active shift away from physical media.
"As customer preferences and the broader entertainment division persist to tilt away from physical discs to virtual, physical game disc production for all fresh games releasing on PlayStation consoles will be discontinued starting January 2028," Sony said.
The firm described the judgment as "a natural course" for Sony Interactive Entertainment.
