PM orders nationwide prohibition on substandard syringes to curb spread of infectious diseases
Premier Shehbaz Sharif on Friday directed representatives to impose a nationwide prohibition on the manufacture and use of substandard syringes as part of efforts to curb the spread of infectious diseases such as HIV/AIDS and Hepatitis C.
The command came during a session chaired by the premier to evaluate measures taken to prevent the spread of communicable diseases, according to a official comment released by the Premier's Office (PMO).
The session included Statute Secretary Azam Nazeer Tarar, Secretary of Province for Wellbeing Mukhtar Ahmad Bharath, Chief legal advisor Mansoor Awan, Global Fund representative Izaskun Gaviria, general wellbeing experts, representatives of the Government department of National Wellbeing Services, DRAP, and senior province representatives.
PM Shehbaz ordered legal action against individuals and hospitals involved in the use of non-compliant syringes or found criminally negligent in preventing their use.
He also directed the formation of a panel of wellbeing experts to develop recommendations for controlling infectious diseases, instructing it to consult provincial governments before finalising its proposals.
The premier instructed the Statute Government department to work with relevant institutions to propose amendments to the legal and regulatory directive structure where required. "A comprehensive national strategy and its effective carrying out are the only solution to this issue," the premier stated, according to the comment.
